Our district gives us a certain amount of paid professional hours per year. We make a plan and then we can receive that pay whenever we complete the hours. I use mine every year to cover the work I have to complete from home. It makes me feel less bad about having to take things home. Does anyone else have something like that? What do you use it for?

We must complete 20 hours of professional development each year per state mandate. Our district provides those 20 hours built into our school year through days prior to the new school year and within the year through early dismissals here and there . In NJ, each district negotiates their contracts every three years, and, I think, that is the norm for most, if not all, NJ districts. I'll also add that you can attend more than 20, if you wish. The school must approve it, but it is paid for, and you are paid.

Our state also does professional development. I attend a couple days on non-student days during the school year and then 2 specific days at the end of the year. However, these paid professional hours are separate from that. They are individually completed and optional. I have no idea if they are just district specific or state wide. I’ll have to look into that. But it’s nice to have multiple ways of making extra money for things we might have had to do anyway!

We don’t really have anything like that, but it is very interesting to hear about! I am conflicted a lot when I have to bring things home to do. Something like that though would really help lessen the toll on a lot of teachers that do the same thing. Maybe I have to bring that up to somebody when we get into our meetings next month!

You should! It is a lifesaver and helps me not feel so guilty when I need to work a bit from home. I don’t know much about where it came from. I’ll have to look into that to see if it’s a district thing or a state thing.

That's nice; I wish we had that.

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!
