I personally do not send homework unless requested by a parent or if the individual needs extra practice or if they miss a lot of school. Perhaps you can award points to those that complete and return work. These points could be cashed in for a weekly or that day reward. Once other students see what they are not getting most will start turning work in. Or don’t use points. A piece of candy set on a desk or allowing them to choose one from a jar on your desk doesn’t break the bank, but a bag of chips would. A reward could be having one day where they don’t have to do homework, bell work or...if time and admin allows it could be 5 mins of listening to music (earbuds please). Token reward systems work rather well as long as implementation is consistent. Fade the daily to a weekly after several successful weeks.
Let them do work in class or after school. Give them time after school with your help. Parents will let kids stay after if they get one on one help from the teachers
Most kids refuse to do homework and the ones that do the work refuse to turn it in. Do the work in class. Our school has a one hour period once a week called SST , students success time. They can go to any teacher and have time to make up work. Sounds good , right. The kids sit in class and play on their phones or iPad and waste time for an hour. I call it high school recess.
Definitely have them work in class. Teach the lesson, build time to work on it together. And slowly give them independence to work on the homework themselves. Also, general education teachers give a lot of homework and it can overwhelm the kids.
What ever works. How about a reward system for completing hw at home vs at school? Are parents vested and involved in knowing the expectations??
