Agreed. Just tell me what you want

“Hi X, I hope you’re well. *Add ask*” is my preferred style to send and receive.

I always thought that was their way of making sure you’re up for the chat before going all in on a conversation.

^ then say "hi what's up" to signal you are there

Pet peeve!! I don't mind if they send a chat with "Hey, how's it going? When you have a moment, I have a question for you"
That's how I send my chats....I hate the back and forth with hey, hi, how are you, etc....
When they send a "hey" with no follow up, I'll usually reply (depending on who it is) with a "hey there, how can I help?" Or something along those lines
Rising Star
You reply back?
Rising Star
I ignore messages like this. Say what you want in one message.
Rising Star
I dont tho lol proving whatever they wanted was not important
Enthusiast
Not at all, if you were in person they would do the same
Enthusiast
^ most people would wait for you to say "hey" back
"hey Paul"
"hey"
"got that file?"
"yep"
Oddly fragile of OP to not be able to handle the psychological load of that interaction
What about when their next message is “how are you doing?”?

This is the worst. Actually just happened to me, and was followed up with a how was your weekend. Please make it stop.

😒

Gonna be waiting forever then.

I just respond with “yes..” when someone does that
Rising Star
Yeah they get straight to the point after that
I’m usually checking to make sure you’re free to chat. I got into the habit pre-covid. I don’t want to IM asking about the status of something and you have a different client looking over your shoulder or your status didn’t update and you’re actually sharing screens and I’m asking about a confidential transaction.
I totally agree! I like putting everything in the first message so that the other person can assess how much time they have to spare to grant the specific ask. Especially knowing that senior creatives/CDs already have very limited time, I don’t want to waste any more minutes having that back and forth when they can just send feedback/files immediately.

There is definitely a culture thing going on here. Some cultures feel it's just being polite to say hello and do the intro, and others feel that they are stalking/phishing you for a reply. Now I know this, it doesn't irritate me and I just type back "Hi - what can I do for you?" which cuts to the chase!
Enthusiast
I always say hi back even if I'm busy so they will just get to the point of what they want
Huge pet peeve of mine. I ignore these unless from a direct superior.

I’ll gladly take “hey”
