Yikes. Better to job hunt while employed.
Don’t quit with nothing lined up unless you have saved up a lot (and I mean a lot) to live off of. Much easier to find a job while employed than unemployed.
A friend of mine was laid off from his IB role and it took him 10 months to find something else.
I did the same back in early August and quit on a whim. I didn't have a new role until mid November, which surprised me as I thought I'd get a new job quicker than that. Any way you can stay employed while doing your job search? I don't mean to be too negative on your post, I just want to suggest you to think carefully about the potential to be unemployed a while. If you can stomach it potentially a few months I say go for it -- your team, if they like you, will probably understand and not blame you.
My recommendation is to review your strategy before taking action, I don’t believe the job market is hot for most roles, but could be for yours.
Are you financially sound that even if you don’t get a job for about 12 months, you will still be fine?
Do you have a career map, to answer the question of what you actually want to do next and why?
Have you explored option of moving to another department or role change within your current organisation?
Have you considered asking for time off, even if just for a long weekend for you to go away and clear your mind?
At the end of the day, you need to make decision that is best for you, but ensure it is strategic and not just on impulse. When we make impulsive decision, we become desperate and then even find ourselves in worst condition.
Some great comments already made earlier, worth taking those into account. Also, speak to someone that you trust that can challenge your thinking.
Best of luck.
I know everyone is giving negative opinions here but I’m sorry to agree. Think about the market we’re in with companies still focused on maximizing profits - it doesn’t seem like many are in positions to be hiring Corp dev people especially because those positions almost always lead to more money having to be spent whether it’s for external advisors, M&A, etc. Yes, there are companies especially the larger ones with the balance sheets to make those hires but the pool is so limited that you’d hate to be unemployed for a horribly long amount of time
Assuming you’re waiting till after bonus!
Great point actually.
It’s lot tougher to get a job if unemployment.
I do agree with everyone above about liniing something up before you quit. I get where you are coming from but the market is AWFUL right now and people aren't evengtting calls back. It would suck to not have anything lined up and then take months and months to find something. Just a suggestion though, OP.
Understandably hard to not give in to this temptation, but try to line something up prior to quitting. Quiet quit (to the extent possible) if anything while interviewing
You will have a very hard time right now and unless you have 12 months of expenses you’re willing to burn I’d consider staying until you can land something else
Don’t quit till you get another job lined up. It’s not easy out there.
