I mean personally, I wouldn’t even have to think about this. I work as a means to an end and an extra $100k per year is a huge difference.
This is a good situation. Go back to Google and leverage your $300k offer against your $200k offer.
If you already did this, choose what feels right to you. Yeah we work as a means to live, but we are still committing to a considerable amount of our lives at work. Might as well do the work you enjoy for a company you appreciate. If you appreciate $100k annually over a company with a more scrappy team, do that. If you value the work opportunity for less money, do that.
Oh there is no way Google is matching that offer. I am suggesting you can negotiate your salary with Google using your other offer (assuming you still want to work there).
Why TF would you leave 100k on the table for a name? Your last name isn't Google. Take the money.
Remember what Marcellus Wallace said to Bruce Willis: “that voice in your head? That’s just pride F’ing with you.” Take the money.
I faced the same situation. Another smaller company offered a higher annual salary (20k more) than Shopify. Both had stock options altho the other company isn't public. In the end I chose to work at Shopify for the long term resume fragrance and the experience of working at a larger company. I thought I'd regret it honestly, but when I joined the company there were even more perks than I was told! The company culture is so awesome. I am very happy now a few months in. (also Shopify is much more stable than the startup that offered me more)
Big diff between 100k and 20k
Google will keep you within the org until the day you decide to leave. Not sure where the other place is, but it might not be a blue chip / FAANG considering you didn’t name it — I’d go to Google especially if the other place is newer or less stress tested. Recession coming
The potential recession feels manufactured. 🤷🏻♀️ That said, if the $300k offer is at an established company I’d probably go there. That said there are other parts of compensation: PTO, stock/options, wlb, wfh flexibility, etc.
Also, these sound like big salaries but if you’re in the Bay Area they should both allow for a comfortable life but nothing extraordinary.
Take the 300k bc higher pay and title? Do it for a bit and if you don’t like it use it to go back to google but potentially at a higher level? You’ve shown you can get an offer from google so don’t see why you’d have trouble on the next try. I’d only take a pay cut if the WLB was better or I was so burned out
Are stock options part of the 200k or additional? I know people at google and my impression was the stock options were generous.
Pro
If you get stock, you should sell it as soon as it vests. Never bet on the same company twice. You are already betting on them for your income, dont bet a second time with your wealth. See Enron employees who kept their 401K in Enron stock and lost everything - income and wealth - in one fell swoop. Same thing happened in 2008.
You like the team more, it’s a more senior position and you’re getting paid $100k more. So it’s a no brainer! Sounds like a fantastic and arguably “better” job vs the prestige of Google.
If I were you I would take the other job, but keep an eye out at Google hiring with a team that you like better, in a more senior position, which in turn will also pay more. Take that job at Google then!
Great advice here
Now that you know your value- why let Google treat you less-than? Like meeting celebrities- working at the dream brand RARELY is as good as we expect.
Dude take the better offer you'll be a bigger fish in a smaller pond. Sounds like a congratulations is in order. You outdid your dream of Google!
Is something missing here? What’s the total offer package (salary + bonus + equity) for each company?
my wife is just getting into programming and software. More specifically she works in data. How do you make it to a rope that pays 300k in an engineering role
