Recently freelanced for a Publicis owned agency for one week and was subjected to a full background check, with past five years of employment, plus secondary and tertiary education. That seemed like a lot.

Now I’m about to start freelancing at a small WPP owned shop. They’ve booked me but asked for three professional references, even though I’ve freelanced extensively at larger WPP agencies. What a waste of time and a poor use of favors from past coworkers.

Anyone else had to do this?

Had the same experience with a publicis agency, the company doing the background check refused to believe I was a freelancer and demanded I provide tax returns and bank statements to prove it (I didn’t - still got the gig). Then same agency asked me back about 8 months later, and did another background check.

But usually such insane policies are put in place after one or more catalysts. I wonder why they’re so intense

Two main reasons: client MSAs along with all of the legal framework in giant holding companies that have big enterprise clients.

And employment laws, especially in the states big in advertising: New York, California etc. There is a huge assault on freelance work that is making it almost extinct.

Hi Fishes,

Currently I am working as senior software engineer in a product base company. My tech stacks are React, Redux, Node, AWS and Graphql. I am thinking to switch the carrier in Block Chain or Data Science. Will it be a good decision to make the shift.

Total experience is 5 years.

If it's okay to shift. Could you please help me with the steps for preparation? I will really appreciate the help.

Thanks a lot.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Does anyone here freelance (in design or deckmaking) on top of their full time position? How does that work?

Does anyone else struggle with being a freelancer while also being a natural leader? I always feel in freelance roles that they would prefer I just shut up (even though my ideas have been praised and implemented plenty), esp within my own dept. In a full-time role, taking charge is expected, but I'm feeling like I should just sit back and take orders vs trying to be proactive or having thoughts in a freelance role.

Quick PSA: one of the perks of going in-house, is that you’re no longer at an ad agency and all that that entails.

Just started a new in-house tech fl gig and it’s giving me whiplash! Somehow this dept has brought every person/toxic behavior from their old agency just to a new environment. Nowhere is perfect but good god. I honestly think companies/HR could learn a lot about their depts from freelancers.

I recently raised my rates after being told I wasn’t charging enough on here. Both of my main clients have already responded saying they either can’t pay me my new rate ($125/hour with 15 years experience) or are interested in “talking further.” So naturally I’m starting to freak out a little bit. I’m still pretty new to freelancing full time. What do I do/say? Do I hold my ground and hope for clients that pay me what I’m worth? Or lower my rates/standards and hope I can make ends meet! Help!
