I read cover letters sometimes, but I must say they hamper, not help the candidate. If you’re going to write a cover letter, please make sure it’s relevant to the role, has no glaring grammatical errors and makes sense. I come across so many cover letters that are painful to read. If only candidates would focus on the resume and really fine-tune that to each role they apply for.
Helpful thanks
The real value of a cover letter is that you can include or highlight things that may not fit into the dry resume format. So the cover letter shouldn't be a rehash of the resume. It's a chance to show some personality and intelligence. Writing good business letters is a lost art, and a lot of people today can barely write at all. But if you're a capable writer, you can do yourself some good with a smartly crafted cover letter.
Thanks! Great point
I have a very good friend who is a recruiter and she still reads cover letters. She said most the time hiring managers don't read the but she does and thats how she decides who to take to the hiring manager. They definitely still hold value.
