Best options: Marina or Cow Hollow.
Alternatives: North beach, Russian hill, or nob hill.
Anything else is a long commute (Richmond, sunset) or not a great neighborhood (downtown).
North beach is good easy access to restaurants and chinatown, and washintgon square. But older buildings and most don’t tend yo have in unit or in building laundry.
If you like newer development, then East Cut would be ideal. Walking distance to financial district, ferry building/embarcadero to the north east. walk to the west then it’s yerba buena/museums and Moscone center. Good restaurants and drinking holes. Most are high rises with amenities and close to public transportation. Relatively safe.
I concur with Director 1, but I’m biased because I live in Mission Bay now.
But I started in North Beach for 6+ yrs with a rent controlled apartment, then to South Beach before landing in Mission Bay. All have perks just depends on what you want
North Beach, upper Polk and parts of Marina/cow hollow will be fun with bars and restaurants. But these are all older developments so you sacrifice comfort. Mission Bay is new but quiet, and a little of a food desert.
Marina, Richmond, Outer sunset (beachside, more family oriented though), Rincon hill (if you want to be somewhat in city center but close to the water too)

This is me too, I live in Nob Hill and either walk or take the bus to work.
Me: F, 28.
I’m an 8-minute walk from work. I like the financial district, though technically I’m on the cusp of FiDi in Rincon. Great view of the Bay, close to the Ferry Building and Embarcadero. My rent is 3.3k a month with concessions, but there are some places cheaper—especially if you get a studio. My building actually has several 1 bedrooms and studios cheaper, but I needed the largest 1br option because I have two cats. Anyway, just in case you do have pets, consider getting them registered as ESAs. My building charges $75 more a month for each cat/dog.
Also, I will add that I think my area is very safe. It’s just working people and since it’s pretty dead outside of work hours, you don’t see many vagrants because there is no one to hustle. That’s not to say you see none, but even when I visit my rich friends in Presidio, there are homeless people, often causing a ruckus. I often pass zero homeless people on my walk to work; and if I pass them, I would’ve passed them anyway getting off the BART. I’ve also lived in Nob Hill and though quieter, there are more chances to get into altercations taking the bus home. Not needing to use public transportation for work is awesome.
I’m in SF without a car (near Pac Heights), and I really like it—it’s way WAY sleepier city than nyc, if that’s what you’re measuring against. However I will say that the lack of nature is really hard (coming from Seattle and Portland, so like… not used to this); the parks are large but mostly maintained and while you can definitely bike/bart/ferry to hiking locations it’s not a daily thing.
On the bright side: SF has some very cool tropical nature vibes in the city! I see so many weird birds and plants, and there are wild parrots!
I’m in the less expensive area of pac heights, but prices are still steep—I pay 1800 for 250sq ft studio with laundry in the building. Water is free, utilities come out to like 15 a month, food is through the roof, so that might be a consideration. I’ve walked all around at night and never felt unsafe, but everyone has different tolerances.
I loved living in North Beach. I walked to work. You can walk to so many places from there.

I rented an apartment unit in FiDi bc it was 15 min from work, close to both Chinatown and North beach (each few blocks away). Good neighborhood, almost no homeless people, safe, and large apartments with balconies. 2.8k for a studio could be doable on lower floors. DM if interested!
