Should creatives criticize other creatives’ work during reviews? Ex: two teams on a brief, one team presents an idea the CD is liking, but then the other team raises questions/doubts about it.

confusing to hear CDs say no here - I always hear that creatives are expecting you to speak up if you think you see a flaw because we're a •/*'-_.~TeAm~._-*\• and doing so makes you seem proactive.

like

Yeah also confused at the hard no. Obviously it's in poor taste to shit on any co-workers idea, but constructive feedback makes work better. And as adults and professionals, we should all be able to handle it.

I only say something if it's positive.

No. Never. Totally bad form all around.

like

No!

like

The problem is creative teams presenting at the same time. Poor form That should not happen

like

That's so distasteful.

Seek criticism. Not praise. If we all embrace reality, we can cut to the chase, save time and improve the work. If we’re honest and not too delicate, we can help one another be better.

like

AD 1, if you think the idea is flawed or has been done before, wait for the review to finish and speak to your CD in private. This is the way it works in jury rooms, too — individual jurors almost never say: “It’s been done before” to a full room because it’s the fastest way to kill an ad even if it has nothing in common with that other ad.

like

Ok. So... for me I think it’s always important that everyone works for the work. If you’re saying it’s been done before, then it’s fine to say, “this is similar to _____. “ And then it’s on the CD and team to investigate and either solve it so it’s differentiated enough or abandon the idea. I’ve had plenty of discussions like this. We often pull the work up then and there and evaluate if it’s salvageable, completely different or dead.

The type of shop and size of your team as well as how they work will influence if this is bad form or not. With me, it’s not. But you’ll have to navigate the conversations properly. Sometimes it’s like my example above. Sometimes it’s talking with the creative team, other times the CD. Just make sure you’re positive, constructive and helpful. I believe in tearing down ideas that don’t work (and building them to be better). I don’t believe in tearing down people.

like

Valid AD1. I would maybe bring it up to the other team without the CD being around? But in a low-key way? That way, you're helping them make their idea better without being a douche. I know I'd appreciate it.

like

I think it’s okay plus it up but calling out issues and problems or trying to kill other teams work is a generally frowned upon.

like

If it's a meeting where only creative is present, I give teams a chance to weigh in on the other teams' work. They may see something I don't, and critique is a skill good creatives need to hone. It's one more area I can help them grow.

Now, if it's a meeting with account, then no. Thsmese generally come after our own meetings, so we should have a unified front going in.

like

Unless it's something better said before a creative review with a little tact, constructive criticism should absolutely be given. It's a creative review for a reason, and everybody in the room should have the capacity to keep it professional.

Having said that, your criticism will go over much better if you can build on the discussion - nobody likes armchair critics that consistently pick holes in the work without bringing a solution to the table. That's so damn annoying.

likehelpful

Yes, if it makes the creative/idea better. That’s the entire point of reviewing. If you’re too sensitive to take constructive criticism during an internal review, you should probably pick a different line of work.

Let’s not use that term

This seems to prove agencies need legit training on how to give and receive feedback we are all on different pages

If it’s been done before you need to call it out. Looks bad on the whole agency, including you.

CW5 that competing against each other idea is part of the mess Advertising is in. Creatives should be owning work and like a few others said, learning to be critical of the work (not each other) and working to make ALL work in the agency better. Gang bang briefs are so common now. It’s the only way some places work now. I’m not saying never put multiple teams on a brief. But the way it’s done now is usually a mess that invites too much selfish competition and not a lot of making the work and team stronger. I’m with CD5 on this. This is important and there’s a right way to do it and teach it and nurture it so everyone and the creative output are better for it.

like

I struggle with this as well. Especially when you know the other team’s idea that’s being liked by the CD has been done before.

Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?

Need some feedback! So I was forced to move jobs about 6 months ago due to reorg and the new leader opting to bring their existing EA with them, without even meeting me. Good evening all,
With my partner we are considering making a move to the countryside of Switzerland, with a gorgeous RE project offering incredible views on immaculate mountains and lake. However, it is far away, and will require 1h+ train/car commute vs. 10 min biking right now. We are scared it will bite us back at some point, although COVID helped w/ remote working being a new norm. The project will be done 2024, so I hope to have a more relax job by then. Any similar experience to share?

I am an associate at an AM200 firm and was (IMO) very clear prior to accepting this role that I value work-life balance and wanted to try to keep work at night on the weekends to a minimal, but since February, it seems like it’s always something that requires my time as needed disregarding “business hours” or my personal schedule. Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?
