Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

“he's not the hero the project deserves, but the one it needs right now. So, we'll shun him, because he can take it.
….
Because he’s not our hero…
He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Data Engineer.”
My dashboards are pretty and useful
Basically…
The data scientists and ML engineers would have been sold to the client as data engineers too and would also be in there digging the hole
I was mostly a data scientist and then I did one data engineering project and now I’m just stuck as a data engineer since it’s in such demand 😩
Yeah in consulting especially . Then when. We need a good DS they are hard to find . So annoying
I got asked the other day if I can code in Python... on bothy internal resume and client facing resume it pretty clearly says PySpark and Scala... but sure... let's live in a moment in a world where I can know PySpark but not know enough Python to be useful...
I mean.. one could know PySpark from working with the Spark APIs and know very little Python 😅
I always (semi joke) say I'm the plumber clanging pipes. But the team also knows without me mopping up data spills, cleaning up trash data, keeping the lights on, none of their work will ever make it out of the factory production line.
I appear, give them advice, then return to the shadows of the engineering bay, giving obeisance and offering fragrant oils to the Great Data Factory.
Why you gotta shiz on people in other data related careers?
I’m a data scientist and I feel the same on many projects. The root cause is rarely a lack of understanding. It’s more like fucked up incentive structures and lack of accountability which cause people to have priorities that directly conflict with the goal of building something that actually works.

Just because you don’t understand how the model works doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for the client.
As others have said, dashboards are pretty and useful.
Well, I may not understand the model, but I know for a fact that the data supporting all that stuff is bad. So yeah, clients dont give a damn about data quality and governance as long as they can see some bs numbers in front of them.
If you want to be worshiped as a data plumber, the tech industry is for you

You can caveat what you think is not strong enough. But real world data is rarely strong. You’ll need to educate and convince others.
This is data in real world.
I'm a data product owner and I have to fight the fight on the behalf of data engineers on a daily basis.
it's my job to help with these conversations, but I add, while it can be difficult and annoying to know what's best, it's often in the best interest to articulate well why what they are asking might not be what they need, but you'll happily do it. it's tough.
