So, for the first time in a long time, I’ll be taking a full-time agency job. They’re sending me a company laptop. I have no plans to do anything nefarious or stupid on it, but wondering how much the agency keeps tabs on it. Like, do y’all add your personal email accounts to it? Or your personal calendar and contacts? Social media usage on it, etc?

My two cents - don’t use it for anything personal. Companies can (and will, I’ve seen it) monitor your usage. It’s company property. I definitely know of people who put personal stuff on it, but I think that’s a dumb idea. I don’t even use Google on my work machine for anything personal. I don’t think most agencies monitor everything every employee does all day long, that would take too much labor and money, but that doesn’t mean they don’t occasionally look. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I say use your personal phone or laptop instead.

I do the same, i don’t do anything personal on my work laptop and don’t sync any of my personal devices to it (iPad, iPhone). I’ve gotten to the point where i don’t use Teams or Outlook on my phone because i need a clear separation of work/home.

I do everything from my work computer and rarely think twice about it. If anyone comes at me for being on Reddit or TikTok or NYT or email too much, so be it. My whole job is to engage with culture and tech.

I don't imagine omnicom has the time or staff to monitor 64,000 employees computers. At most they monitor big red flags. It's probably roughly the same odds as your taxes getting audited.

That being said, an omnicom IT person last week suggested I use the guest Wifi whenever in the office. The implication was that company WiFi was more heavily monitored.

Assume they have access to more than you’d like. Depends on the company too. Some could give a s#|¥, some may be insecure and monitor.

I occasionally check my social media or email from my work laptop. But since I am at home, mostly from my personal computer. Heck, I do most of my work in my own computer.

When I was working from an office, I’d have Facebook, etc up because I’m not going all day without checking Twitter and don’t wanna be staring at my phone too much at work.

In the age of work from home, no more than I need. I do wind up logging into gmail for docs/Google slides, but I’m not checking personal emails on there (and definitely not applying for jobs from my work laptop anymore, which I… maybe shouldn’t have been doing pre-pandemic either 😂

Honestly I use it for absolutely everything except for banking. But I even did my taxes on it last week. It’s much better than my personal. And I don’t feel like investing $2k to upgrade my own computer.

They can peep my personal email, I guess. Nothing too spicy. Lots of spam.

Same. I’m also applying for new jobs on mine every day. I don’t think anyone who has the power to see what I’m doing gives a sh*t.

Sometimes I think people think into this too much. Sure they can monitor what you’re doing but if you’re not looking at porn or sharing company secrets then you’re fine. No one really cares if you purchase those shoes you’ve been wanting or check social media from time to time. We’re not robots. Besides if you’re performing what reason do they have to audit you?

likesmart

I use my work laptop for everything, even applying to jobs. I don’t care if they’re spying on me. As long as you’re not doing anything illegal or shady, who cares?

If you are placing personal files on your work computer, remember to backup those files on a drive/cloud that you own. In event that there is a “staff action” you may find yourself locked out of the system before you have a chance to retrieve your personal files.

I never do any personal stuff in a company laptop. 100% agency work only.

Although the team has asked me to invest some time in learning Java but I’m skeptical about all of this as the position is Data Engineer II so not sure how the expectations will change. Even if I invest time in learning Java I can be at a beginner level.
