Just calculate my billable hours across the year to know what I need to bill each month. I just take vacation into account in the calculation.
Subject Expert
Yes. By over billing the rest of the year.

Welcome to the rat race

You have to bill whatever your target is for the year; if you take holidays (which you should) you have less time to hit that target. You plan accordingly.
Take a long vacation after you’ve finished a very busy time and are ahead of pace on billable hours.
Subject Expert
Firm dependant but most dont prorate hours for vacation.

This is the reason people bill like crazy when the hours are there so that they can take the long vacation. I’m in the Midwest, so ppl typically try to work super hard in the winter to chill in the summer.

Some firms will give you billable credit for up to a week of vacation (e.g. Orrick) but if they don’t, then agree with the rest of the folks here that it’s up to you to make up the missed billable time.

It is encouraged and in most practice groups, very respected. Tone is set from the top to respect that time.

Thanks!
I divide how many hours I need to bill over 50 weeks instead of 52 to account for 2 weeks vacation and try to hit that weekly target. It feels more palatable by the week than by the month

I do the same, but divide by 46. 2 weeks of holidays and 4 weeks vacation.
