So, is ChatGPT going to make lawyers obsolete? Or will it just the a tool to assist us/non-lawyers?

It can’t handle citations - we get to stay employed!

I asked it some patent prosecution questions and it was wrong so no, I don’t see it replacing us yet.

I agree- it will evolve. It’s super impressive now but it’s hard for it to make strategic recommendations. I’ll be impressed when I tell it a fact pattern and ask it to make a strategy recommendation that matches what I would do.

It might make paralegals obsolete, but not attorneys. AI can’t negotiate or try a case

like

Even when it technically can, human clients won’t want to fully trust an AI with their case or deal, and will want some humans ultimately responsible. You also need humans for the relationship and customer service. For trial lawyers, you also need to think about juries trusting AI. There are many challenges to full AI replacement that have nothing to do with the technical limitations.

It’s pretty cool ngl but I don’t think human counsel is replaceable

like

Nah. Bar association will protect us and keep us employed.

Ask it bar review questions. It often gets them right but will make up explanations that are wrong

Last I heard ChatGPT doesn’t have a law firm partner dad so the traditional way to gainful employment is still safe

I’m at a midsize firm in the Midwest and I’ve noticed that we’ve hired multiple associates who all graduated law school the same year. Some are coming from clerkships, other firms, etc., but they’re all on the same graduation year. This feels like it’s setting up a squeeze down the road for these folks with respect to partnership. Is there something I’m missing or is this something that will cause issues down the road?

I have a car lease that I’m trying to get rid of in NY. My in-laws want to buy the car from my lease and give it to their mom, but I would have to buy the car out myself and then transfer the title. The plan is to have 3 people write a check to me for $10k each as a gift. Then I buyout the car using $30k. When I transfer the title to their mom, do they have to pay the tax? The buyout price ($30k) already includes sales tax, and if we have to pay tax again to transfer the title, it’s 👎

C&F question: any attorneys here with a DUI conviction on your record? If so, did you have any issues clearing Character & Fitness in a new jurisdiction?

DUI occurred nearly two years ago as a senior associate in state X with no corresponding discipline in state X; however, now trying to get admitted into state Y...

Obviously, this is an extremely regrettable event, and will make that clear to C&F, along with post-DUI progress.

Curious if anyone else here went through something similar.
