My wife finally told me last night that she didn't know what I do last night ( I'm a securities lawyer) but she didn't want to sound stupid. Its been 5 years.

I’m not even sure what you do, and I’m an attorney.

A5, yes! Laws less common, but the firm I summered at we represented most of the cities/municipalities in the state, and helped them draft their laws as well as defend laws when challenged as unconstitutional (in the state constitution). I got to work on that as a summer (super cool) and then never again. 😂

I’m almost twenty years in and the same is true here.

I appreciate that.

Now that we’ve both been working at home for 8 months, my non-lawyer wife asked me the other day, “so all you do is just read and occasionally join a conference call?” I said, “Yep, pretty much.”

My family has no concept of what I do (finance attorney). They just know I work for banks and sometimes do things with real estate. 😂😂

Kudos to her for asking though. I’m sure she got tired of making up different narratives when people asked her what you do. I just tell my family I’m a corporate lawyer lol.

I do this too, even though we have very distinct practice groups (corporate isn't anywhere close to finance at our firm). But "corporate lawyer" seems to work better than "remember those mortgage-backed securities that crashed the entire world economy in The Big Short? I help make those."

Yeah I'm with someone who after 20 years doesn't really get what I do either.

Like she didn't know your title or area of law or she didn't know what you do on a day-to-day basis?

OP how did you make the switch from litigation to securities? Interested in possibly doing it myself

Author, were u in biglaw and moved to compliance at IB? Can you elaborate?

My husband and I have little clue what the other does on a daily basis and we very rarely talk about work, unless it’s anecdotal. I like it this way. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This question may not be related. However I wanted to know from personal and family point of view how it is like to relocate from India and live abroad .
Let's say Family consists of husband , wife and a kid . Don't they feel loneliness/ difficult to adjust? Do they look for similar asian nationalities to kill boredom?
