It sounds like whether or not your workplace is tolerable is totally dependent on your bosses mood. No one should have to work on edge like that.

You have to work on consciously separating your emotions from factors you can't control. You can't control if they praise or criticize you. But you can control if you're happy and productive and emotionally consistent regardless. For me, it took a lot of therapy.
