Someone I know just got hired for a job I applied to with the same background and honestly weaker credentials, and I’m trying really hard not to spiral. I’m happy for them, but it’s that gut-punch feeling of “why not me?” We both interviewed, we both prepped, and I thought I had a stronger shot. I know comparison is a trap, but when the wins aren’t coming, it’s hard not to take it personally. What do you do when you’re proud of someone else but also quietly crushed?

It’s kind of like dating, they are looking for the right fit. Does not mean you’re worse or they are better than you, just different. Ask the hiring manager for feedback, it’s helped me in the past. Don’t take it personally.

It needs to be said again, don’t take it personally. It could even be said a third time if somebody feels the need to! It’s work, and what seems like a black and white answer/choice to you isn’t always that way. Focus on your wins, getting the interview, practice, and take that into the next one.

I like to focus on what I was in control of and did I do myself justice? You can’t control all the other variables and therefore it means nothing, as long as you’re happy with what you did.

There is nothing wrong with feeling both emotions at the same time. Job hunting is an extremely stressful and disheartening experience. Treat yourself to your favorite food, a good movie, and get ready to jump back into things the next day because you've now been reminded that there are still jobs out there and people being hired. It will be your turn soon.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].
