I would suggest spending almost zero time consuming west law and reading pleadings and instead reach out to the attorneys you admire, tell them about starting your own firm and ask to have a phone call with them or meet them for lunch. Don’t expect anything out of those meetings other than information. If you go in with that mindset, you are likely to come out with some referrals after enough meetings/lunches. Part of it is a numbers game. When I started my firm 4 years ago, I tried to fill my calendar with lunches and meetings. I wanted to meet with at least 5 different lawyers every week. The vast majority of those meetings did nothing but provide me perspective. But, I eventually made relationships with enough people that the business started flowing. I did not start paid marketing until I had consistent cash flow of over 6 figures a month. I now have 6 associates and 20 staff.
Where are you located?
I’m in southern ca. This market is amazing. Let’s talk.
There’s no business without clients. Even when you begin to sign some you’re going to need to prepare for not seeing any money for quite some time. Even a fast settlement will still take several months. Maybe you can find a firm to work for as an independent contractor to keep the lights on and get some hands on experience with depositions, motions, medical records, etc. You can continue to market for cases in the meantime.
Expand what your firm does. Do closings, traffic violations, divorces and criminal law. I’d also suggest reaching out to your local county bar and getting on the referral system if possible. That should help push the door open for clients. Once you’re in if you do a good job they’ll continue to come to you o
This is good advice. Estate planning is another area that can be a decent money maker. Everyone dies and most folks have pretty straight forward estate planning goals. With a bit of practice and good forms, you should be able to crank out estate planning documents in an efficient manner. You can charge a flat fee for estate planning work too, which clients tend to prefer over hourly fees. Your estate planning clients could come back to you with more work or referrals.
On a related note, some attorneys in my area offer to hold the original will in their office for safe keeping. It’s not a violation of the rules of professional conduct in my jurisdiction, but you would be in trouble if the will is lost or destroyed while in your possession. Once the testator dies, the family will come to you for the will where you can offer them your probate administration services. One older attorney I know says that he is waiting on his filing cabinet of wills to “mature.”
I want to eventually start my own PI firm, but I’m order to do so I’m working for different Law firms and understanding how they get their clients, I’ve worked for a firm that has a ton of tv ads and billboards, I’ve worked for a firm that has no TV ads or billboards, both are successful, the most important part is putting your name out there, meeting with providers, getting them to know your name, in my opinion
I had to start my own firm for some complex personal reasons two years ago, and I did have a good amount of litigation experience. I got more clients than I could handle from prisons. And if you’re in NJ and you want some let me know! But I’m also making very little money from this line of work. And I mean VERY little. Although I love it, I’m looking for a job. I don’t think you can really just open a PI shop. You need mentorship and a reputation. I’d work for a PI firm for a few years at first. If you’re independently wealthy and can wait a few years for settlements to come in, many prison cases could bring in high jury verdicts, but it’s a long slog and prison litigation is very perilous. The law is designed with all kinds Of technicalities to kill prison lawsuits, but this is a good way to get some experience and maybe a little bit of money. Most private lawyers won’t work with prisoners because they can’t usually pay a retainer or fees, are historically unpopular plaintiffs, and the pockets of prisons are often uninsured government entities with staff attorneys, so it costs them nothing to litigate.
Yea, you don't need to look at any pleadings right now. I would also reachout to and join the practice management and/or solo firm sections of your local bar. Also join the Plaintiff's bar of your local bar association. All these will help with leads. Good luck!
Just realized I gave you the wrong link lol— it’s SEOSavvyLawyer.com

How long have you been open?
Dear attorney:
what methods are you using for clients?? Do you have SEO/UEO campaigns running? Are you tracking you webfunnel metrics? Are you doing any outbound prospecting? Do you have any inbound seeds setup?
I whole heartedly believe you can catch traffic by setting up traffic nets. After just a short keyword analysis, it seems there’s up to 100k searches for pi attorney on Google every month.
Deeper analysis shows multiple firms running paid-ad campaigns — i.e Ali awad law; Dtla pi law; Jacob Emrani etc. I promise you that if they have been running fb ad campaigns for the last 7 months, that means they are either stupid, or extremely profitable.
What methods are you using and what is/is not working?
Let’s talk. Book a call with me and I’ll happily walk you through setting your campaigns up.
SEOSavvyAttorney.com
I worked in several firms including A lawyer who got his firm up to 700+ clients (PI) in 3 years leveraging marketing.
You don’t have to ‘expand’ your practice— you just have to hone in on targeting your niche. This can be done easily.
Let’s talk.
P.S: Leverage outbound, inbound and paid ad traffic. Word of mouth isn’t as powerful in 2021.
Good luck! It can be very hard, but there is a lot of solid advice out there. Try supplementing the income with other areas of practice.
SMH Author hasn’t acknowledged that I can help him…like hop on a 20mon call with me I’ll show you how to can siphon your local niche’s competitors’ traffic.
I can also teach you how to automate mass emails, produce omnipresent marketing campaigns and even target folks who follow celebrity injury attorneys.
JA1 thanks for chiming in. You’re right I do come off strong when I’m excited about helping attorneys who are sinking underwater.
I’m offering OP a free call with advice and hoping he takes me up on it so I can show him exactly what he’s missing.
On that note— let me clarify to the author that SEO isn’t hard marketing. It’s optimizing a website with content so that the attorney’s website appears under more search queries.
I’d recommend that any and every law firm owner leverage it to get more clients each month.
💯
Anyway— goodluck to y’all, attorneys 🔥
