You got this! I took it last fall. I remember being a lot more comfortable in the afternoon session. That said, your firm sounds terrible. My firm (large IP firm) gave me a week of billable credit for my study time so I didn’t fall behind. I also took off as much time as I needed. We would love to have more people like you.
Oh wow! This is helpful to hear — I’m only in my second year of practice, so I don’t really know what’s normal. A week of billable credit toward studying sounds incredible. I hope my afternoon session is like yours!!
Phewww I just wanted to update and say that despite feeling the entire time like I was bombing — I passed!
Thank you!! Feels elite 🥳
I hope you pass and then never forget how terrible this firm treated you.
Look for a new job asap. Good luck!
You can do it! I was too anxious during the break to eat anything so I just took a ten minute breather and went back for round two.
Don’t stress yourself out too much.
How did you make it to being a mid level without a reg number?
I didn’t come in as a tech spec. I have a life sciences background. I definitely received advice when I was a law student that I wouldn’t be able to find a patent job without a reg number and/or a PhD (specific to life sciences).
I can tell you that hiring practices are starting to change. You can get a job without a reg number if you have good grades, a demonstrated ability to do the work, and a “team player” demeanor. That being said, there’s no way I could keep going in the field beyond a year or two without passing the patent bar.
I am curious what firm you're at if you want to dm/chat with me. I hope you passed!! I am glad firms are leaning in to tech specs but I cannot imagine how hard it would be to study for the patent bar while also in law school and/or working full time (or student associate hours if in school).
