Oh goodness. The worst.
This may not be good form, but I usually don't respond unless they follow up and tell me what they want...

“So uhh, yeah, I sort of did something yesterday because my boss asked me to. Was it illegal?”

Idk if everyone has a name for that feeling but I call mine, “forum shopping”
Got a call at 5pm yesterday from a VP on the company’s leadership team: “so uh, I know you only hear from me on Fridays before a holiday weekend but x person on my team dropped the ball on something and I was hoping you’d be able to save him and fix this before it becomes a major mistake he can’t recover from.”
This happened last month too with the same person and same VP calling me, except last time I had to cancel my PTO to fix the screw up. The issue here is preventing future laws from being broken though, not a law already being broken, so I’d much prefer this type of call.
Tbh I actually appreciate the grace this VP is giving this person. He told me last night that the person was “panicking” and is just “very junior”. But my direct report was super pissed about the situation because the person that effed up tried to make excuses instead of just owning up to it and asking for help. It also shouldn’t have been escalated to a VP and instead gone from my report to me. But I don’t dislike the person in question and sometimes letting someone save face is better, especially when it’s clear that blame is properly apportioned and acknowledged by leadership.
Either legal should be able to disable Trams or we should be able to bill for it from randos. I don’t think people appreciate how much our work has changed (in bad ways) when randos have free immediate access to us in a way unthinkable 20 years ago
