The Billable Hour is a relic of the past that is actively destroying our mental health. We are the only profession that incentivizes working slowly and punishes efficiency, and it’s making us all miserable. I could finish a task in two hours using new tech, but I’m encouraged to take six so the firm can hit its numbers. Why are we so terrified of moving to flat-fee billing or value-based pricing?

What is the bonus structure like in Top Tier BB (JPM, CS, etc.) Private Banking Solutions (Investment Side) groups in NYC? Analyst, Associate level? Looking for a percentage range and understanding how it compares to IB/S&T bonus structure.

Has anyone been successful in negotiating the schedule on a global pregnancy bill? My provider won't bill by visit and split the global cost into four payments all due by the 28th week. I don't understand how that's legal since it is so off the calendar of services and crosses calendar years (and insurance coverage), where most costs are incurred at the end of pregnancy with increased visit frequency and delivery.

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

Advice Request: Started my career litigating. Switched to niche transactions (so about half and half at this point). What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice?
