There’s this scene in Midnight In Paris where Owen Wilson’s character asks Hemingway to read his novel because he wants his opinion…Hemingway tells Owen Wilson’s character something like “If it's bad, I'll hate it because I hate bad writing, and if it's good, I'll be envious and hate it all the more. You don't want the opinion of another writer.” Anyone feel like this applies to lawyers? I once had a boss who would rewrite everything no matter whose work he was editing. Luckily I’ve moved on.

Eh, I get that. But also I work in a pretty collaborative office and the input of other lawyers is usually helpful

Lawyers can’t help themselves. They love to wordsmith. I find that many times people will find creative ways to reword something. It’s all good it’s just the nature of the profession.

I think the biggest difference is it depends who’s signing the document but also the budget for that particular assignment and as you mentioned the particular partner. If you’re talking about a journal article or publishing something on behalf of the firm, that could be similar to a novel. But otherwise the goal of the writing is very different and reasonable minds can differ in the strongest arguments to make and how to arrange them

It depends. Some people rewrite just to rewrite but I’ve actually had some people give very helpful feedback. Also, sometimes the client may want something described a certain way or they may want to avoid a certain tone, and someone who has had more experience with that client would want to share that with you.

Writing is incredibly subjective. For this reason, feedback on writing can introduce bias. It’s helpful to keep this in mind when receiving feedback. I try to not take things too personally, especially when the feedback is vague and negative and really about style, not substance.

Agree. It’s lowkey annoying when I look through the changes and all of it is just slightly rephrasing things in a way that makes no discernible impact
