For years, our district has had teachers create a class contract
, BUT the students have input on the expectations, when they have a say, there is better buy in and accountability. The students do sign it. For teachers who have multiple classes, there is a contract for each class. Without mentioning the program, there are question prompts to elicit responses. It is effective if used appropriately.

What is the program you are referring to. For years we used PBIS, but this year we switched to RCA (Ron Clark Academy). I miss the PBIS program so much
We do have classroom expectations, however I LOVE the suggestion of making it a class activity and they also have their input on it. The whole concept of having it in black and white is helpful for me and the students, everybody knows the expectations and it makes managing the classroom easier.

So my thinking is that if they have to do a write up or detention, I can just hand them their signed compact and have them write it on a separate page (then attach it to their signed compact).
I’m on the fence for a couple reasons. I’m definitely about rules/expectations, posting them and having the kids understand what is expected. I would involve the kids in someway to get them to “buy into” it. The other issue is administrators following through. They always seem to post a lot of rules, but make exceptions for every kid that gets in trouble.
I’ve always posted general rules that mirror the districts policies so I can always follow through and administer consequences, not admin, my own.
MSBT…Right!!! They never seem to follow the “rules” the district lay out. That’s why I handle all my own consequences; usually more relevant and appropriate.
If you teach science Flinn was going to change the science contract to include rules regarding phone use during lab class. I haven’t looked at it lately to see if the changes were made although they were working on it the last time I checked. Most districts require parents to sign sone type of safety contract for science classes. From what I’ve seen all other forms rules that parents/kids sign never matters. Just the ones approved & required by your district. Your personal created contract will not hold any weight. Trust me.
