This is so funny hahahahaha feels like an episode of the office
In all seriousness - let them perform, don’t make people attend, and maybe preface/start with an intro saying that we recognize our employees come from a range of backgrounds, beliefs and traditions and an individual performance is just that - not an endorsement by the company, but a way to share our different ways of celebrating.

^ It’s an end of year meeting… usually they “take lunch” at the end of the day by leaving early when we have these things, so they end up winning. If someone really didn’t want to go I suppose they wouldn’t have to, but that has never been an issue as far as I know. People seem to enjoy not having to work, it’s like a free day. We talk about next year’s goals, have awards, lunch, and the talent show, etc. The plan was to have the show following/ at the end of lunch. Colleagues can have the option to go back to their cubes and work or watch the show.
God I want to go in house
Please don’t compel attendance at a lunch holiday party regardless of what you decide about this song.
Legal Counsel 1: this comment! I was wondering if the OP’s company worked in macro data refinement. You would actually need to turn off my brain before I participated a work talent show.
We live in a post-fun world, you can’t have a holiday party.

This sounds like an organization that needs a good religious song at its party.
Grab a mic and let 'er rip.
Honest response here: why the hell are you even considering compelling attendance to a talent show? Please don’t compel “fun.” Plus, if you don’t make it mandatory, you don’t need to address your issue.
Sorry about that situation. When I first read your post I was a little confused as to who thought this was a good idea. Understand your position. I guess I ‘m constantly confounded by adults who enjoy company wide parties (and even more so by those who want to perform at those parties). I get your doing your job- but this type of working environment is my nightmare.

Is this really what people worry about?

Absolutely. Employee expressions of religious beliefs is a regular issue for us. It’s just so thorny.
Well it’s a holiday party and one of the holidays people celebrate is Christmas, which happens to be a religious holiday. Technically Christmas songs are also religious. Would there be an issue if the song being performed was “O holy night”?
Also…we’re praying for you.

thanks. and for the record I am apolitical - but in todays woke culture… can’t be too cautious. I actually did some research today and I think we are good to go. The cases that survived MSJ for religious discrimination were really extreme… pretty sure what we are doing is okay.
