You don’t focus lessons on nihilism or victimhood. Life is unfair and random in its distribution of fuckuppery. You model resilience and optimism.

I do model realism and fortitude with my students. I always share my story about the loss of my daughter, but I am careful to remind them that even in the bad things of life, we have to carry on. Many students have later told me that my story helped them get through bad things.
The same could be shown for adults and all
school staff. One is going through divorce, another is supporting the whole family financially because their partner is laid off, another has a child with special needs or aging parents to care for. Every single person has a story. Compassion and understanding are crucial for every human. So how do we show understanding for everyone’s stories, without making excuses for behavior of children and adults alike? How to we create expectations of excellence and progress when literally everyone is dealing with something?

I think this is where some much of the entitlement attitude comes from. Some people and students feel like what they are going through gives them the right to be brutal to other people. It is a sad day when the realization hits that life is going to keep throwing poo in our life, do we stand their because we stepped in the poo, and blame everyone else. Or do we accept that it happened, wipe up the mess, and move on.
It starts with, "We have to do it anyway." I think of myself and my classroom rules as being guard rails, trying to keep the kids generaly on the road. Consequences matter, but should be proportionate. Yes, I'm sorry there's bad stuff, I'm sympathetic, but we have to do it anyway. Today it's doing the work. Tomorrow it's paying the rent. But I still accept late work. So does the IRS, and the landlord. But there may be a penalty...
