External is never boring if you are good at your job, but hours can be tedious. You work across VC, PE, Hedge & BDC clients and get exposure to a variety of asset classes and industries.
Tremendous amounts to learn and develop your skills. Many people exit to go work for one of their fund clients but a lot of people stick around and make very solid careers out of it.
Either way you start, the skills are transferrable to the other (internal/external) so you can't really make a wrong decision. Internal pays more to start but external pay is by no means bad and quickly scales.
