Oh, the stories I could tell. We’re at a disadvantage clearly in lack of numbers (in a male dominated field). However, remember that we are resourceful and we succeed by being intuitive and being 3 steps ahead (or more!). Diplomacy, tactfulness, emotional intelligence…and don’t forget—don’t let them see you sweat. You can do this!
You can get ahead without them! Just surround yourself with boss ladies in your field
In sales half the time boss ladies are more of a challenge than the men, at least you can read the men….
Oef I feel this post in my bones. I was recently provided with an external mentor and I asked for someone who knows how to navigate this in the tech world and they assigned me someone from Disney parks management. She was the sr VP but I honestly don’t think she’ll understand the scale of volatility, ambiguity, and how that translates into even less opportunity for women to advance. Not to say she hasn’t experienced the boys club, but in a far less chaotic environment. I’m meeting her for the first time today, but if she can’t speak to that, I feel like she’s not useful as a mentor.
It’s a different beast in different parts of the country also.
Ugh. Try working in the EU as a woman over 40 in tech - yikes. Boys club I coukd handle, this is entirely something worse.
I left my last company for this very reason and specifically sought out a company on those lists of “best places for women to work”
