To help encourage independence/trouble shooting/figuring it out, try this: make a short PPT or a small handout with clear directions in the form of a few steps. Tell the students they are flying solo now across the Atlantic and they must answer their own questions as they work through. Questions like “is this the right page?” , “What am I supposed to do next?” “Is this homework?” get diminished when you keep answering “you’re flying solo now.” They enjoy the challenge.

Our connecting flight from JFK at 6:10 was cancelled while we were flying over the Atlantic Ocean, and we were rebooked on a 3:40 instead (2.5 hours earlier) but not notified. I received no email, text or app notification of the flight cancellation or the new flight we were placed on, so we missed it. They now cannot get us home tonight and won’t even guarantee they can get us home tomorrow, impacting my work, (cont)…
