Branding agency.
An advertising agency will have their designs limited because the visual language was already halfway pre-determined by the branding agency.
Design studios tinker too much with aesthetics and rarely truly grasp what the big picture means, even when they try to do big stuff like branding.
A branding agency knows *why* a design should be a certain way, beyond simple aesthetics. Strategy, competition, and market conditions will all play a role in shaping the branding.
Examples: Landor & Fitch, Pentagram, Interbrand, Wolff Olins, Siegel+Gale, Chermayeff Geismar Haviv, MetaDesign
You sound like me ACD1. I found my happy place in post production.
This is what I was thinking!
I’ve run into the same issue myself. I don’t think you need to pick one necessarily but your approach when applying to a design studio needs to be different than an agency and vice versa. Be intentional with the work you show to both places and if you get to the interview phase, I have found showing some of my process is helpful that led to the final result. Many people misrepresent their role in projects and studios/agencies can sometimes be skeptical when they see a hybrid type creative. That’s a strength though and gives you more options.
You just described me.
