Too many people in media call themselves "storytellers" but write like robots. The truth is that it is not storytelling if no one feels anything. It is just words in a paragraph. Copywriters - are we the only ones still fighting for rhythm and feeling in news copy?

I wrote a lot of copy when I was in the creative services department. Had a lot of times where a higher up wanted it to sound like something that's already been written 100x before in a very rigid, inhuman tone when it didn't call for it. You just pick your battles I guess

Some briefs make you feel like you're just dusting off a 10-year-old template

I could be wrong, but I feel like that is on purpose so that it is more palatable to the masses. When you start putting in ‘personality’ and ‘feelings,’ it might not resonate with everyone like the robotic and regurgitated work does.

There’s safety in sameness—but that safety kills originality. I still think we need to take more risks if we want people to actually care.

People who call themselves journalists are storytellers. People who claim to be storytellers are just trying to sell you something.

That’s a savage truth. There’s a fine line between storytelling and spin and a lot of people are just out here selling with no soul in the words.

I feel this in my bones. So much writing now is technically correct but emotionally hollow. I still spend half my time editing to feel right not just read well.

“Technically correct” doesn’t move anyone.

Welcome to our pre-k inclusive classroom. Even with 8 students, and only face to face for 4 hours, we struggle. We struggle being heard through our masks. We struggle with social distancing. We struggle as we find ourselves constantly reminding students to keep their masks on. We struggle to keep them engaged and to teach. One thing we do not struggle with- building connections and showing out love for each child.

I’m trying to transition full time into the Editorial realm, I have some experience, but I’ve had a very hard time getting full time work. So I’ve begun an online certificate program, in hopes it will give me a leg up, as my degree is in a different field. My question is has anyone done the same? And how do they feel it helped? And any other tips on breaking into full time editorial.

Hello, I wanted to mention that I work as a sports commentator, specifically about soccer. I used to be one of the main journalists for Spanish media, but since I moved to Miami I feel the general passion for soccer is very different 🥲 The energy and commitment are not even close to what I felt in Spain, where some businesses would close if the match was too important. I hope this nostalgia goes away soon.
