There’s a handful of closeted conservatives where I work, but it’s only a handful. I also agree with other people who’ve commented that there seems to be more conservatives in the suburbs.
Yess
I haven’t met a single person who admits to being conservative in Portland and I’ve lived her over 5 years.
Actually that’s not true. We had the far right republicans come through Portland in convoy waving guns and wearing maga hats a couple years ago. But they were chased back to wherever they came from pretty quick.
Wherever they came from….lol. Clackamas county.
I’m a moderate who has to liberal-catfish to fit in. My friends don’t know I’m voting Drazan lol
Because I’m sick of the homeless and crime in Portland, democrats have been wringing their hands for too long. Idk if Drazan will actually do anything but it’ll light a fire under Dems to do better
I am very liberal and I swear Portland is doing its best to turn me into a conservative. All the incremental taxes with nothing to show for it… poorly run government… I believe in big government and social safety nets and none of it seems to work here. Considering moving across the river for the tax benefits and safety, and younger me is horrified at myself.
Yep. Give me a centrist competent Republican that still believes in democracy and isn’t going to go full whackjob on abortion rights and gun laws and I’d vote for them.
You’ve got your extremists on both sides no matter where you go. Portland has a white-savior complex but in reality, most people just want equality and fairness. Gets a little supercharged with amplification through news and social media, but as a moderate, you learn to just tune it out. All are welcome, just treat your political ideals like you treat your junk: people may agree to talk about it if you ask nicely, but don’t try forcing it on anyone.
There’s a lot of interpretation within the term ‘conservative’. In my experiences, regardless of political identification, someone who is bigoted toward a person or group who is trying to live their life is likely going to be called out.
There's plenty of conservative people in the Portland metro area. If you're worried that an area is "too liberal" try moving to a suburb further out.
Yeah exactly, I think they're definitely out there - the media just makes it seem like Portland is some kind of liberal crazy zone
I'd probably be considered a conservative-leaning libertarian in Portland today. I hate the authoritarian politics on both sides of the aisle. Could care less about weed. Hate all the virtue signaling and extremism on both sides. I'd say I'm probably most comfortable calling myself a classical liberal that is actually happy to coexist and have civil conversations with people who disagree vehemently with me. People are complex and reducing them to black-and-white categories is helping no one.
Hi I feel seen.
Yuck.
We’re all hiding out in Lake Oswego, West Linn & Tigard tbh
It’s not not true.
Centrist. Portland is not homogeneous and we don’t all have blue hair.
Oregon is a red state that’s blue from the concentration of people in the metro area and Eugene. No need to catfish political affiliations. You’ll be fine. And if you live outside of the metro area, you’ll find plenty of like minded individuals. Outside of the occasional protest or out of town groups coming into the state, the hostility is overblown. Might get some pushback on college campuses, but even there it’s mild at best
Responses like this make me concerned….4.2 million people in the state minus the around 1.5 million people in the metro area plus Eugene equals most of the people? The math is off a tick.
I grew up in deep red Oregon and when I moved to Portland I felt like I was welcomed to be whoever I was (at the time, I was a lil’ Christian baby going to Bible college). I remember meeting people who CLEARLY were spiritual not religious and having them be super accepting. Not a Christian anymore, but so think the city is kinder than folks think.
There are a lot actually! However, you'd never see them flaunting it in the streets. But definitely yes!
Yes, but moreso in the suburbs. I live in a suburb, vote conservative in most cases, but am more of a libertarian.
There’s a bunch. My ex-husband and his friends are good examples 🙃
Look in the wealthy spots and - pesto! - you'll find the conservatives. MAC is a rich vein. There's a decent chance this state elects a Trumpy republican governor and since the majority of the voters live in metro Portland there must be some reds.
Oh they are here. As someone mentioned - the wealthier Portland residents definitely seem to lean conservative. I know people who I’d never guess would be and voted for Trump twice etc.
I am. I don't feel like it is hostile at all. Sure there are people who are extreme, but not everyone is that way.
