Can you provide a few more details? What type of online program are you doing? What type of editorial job are you targeting? What kind of work experience do you have?
The program is a certificate program that will take 1 year it’s called the Media Writing Essentials program. My ideal role would tie into my previous field (fashion) so I’m looking into content writing for lifestyle platforms or magazines. I have experience writing my own blog and being a freelance Editorial Manager for a website in the past for a few years.
I don’t have much experience of ft editorial but I’ve written for a magazine and edited it over the past few years. Sometimes the lesser paid more regular gigs can support you to get the full time gig, it’s happened for many of the fellow writers who want to build a career solely in the media. Good luck!
I think Editorial is honestly one of the hardest fields to break into - the competition is fierce. I agree with CP1, I would go for the smaller jobs first and try to build up your reputation before going for the big ones
I have worked in the media industry for more than 20 years. People want to see examples of your published work. It doesn’t matter as much where it was published (can be smaller/local/niche publications even) but it needs to be good. It is great that you are getting media writing training through that program and it could be useful for you as you aim to become a stronger writer. But people in media are not going to care about the certification itself. They want to see a body of published work, ideally 3-5 good samples of it.
