Dang that sucks hard. Really sorry to hear that. Although it sounds like, in the end, you may have dodged a bullet because that company sounds terrible to work for anyhow and it seems like they're going to do whatever they want to do regardless of legal counsel or assessment of risk, in which case I'd imagine being a lawyer there would make you want to bash your head into a wall
You did the right thing by asking what you were entitled to. If they were that quick to let you go by that request, they would have likely let you go in the near future. Be proud that you stuck up for yourself even if it cost you this job. In my opinion, I would have done the same thing you did.
Wow. I'm so sorry. That is for sure a fear of mine. How much notice did they give you?
Unfortunately, the acquirer gets to call the shots and if they were used to not having in-house counsel they'll think it's fine to keep going that way. They'll pay for this decision one way or another. You did the best you could, find something better now.
Woof. You'll land on your feet.
Create a news alert with the company's name so you can revel in their future legal troubles.
Sole attorney (5.5) years at a mid-size tech co (my title is Lead Sr. Legal Counsel - so, feel ya!) and this is my biggest fear. I bet you busted your ass on that acquisition too. I'm so sorry and I bet they will be too.

That’s wild
Agree with everyone that it sucks really bad but you likely dodged a bullet. That kind of attitude is rough specially if they’re large and operated without anyone internally. Hope they gave you some severance at least. You’ll land on your feet quickly!
Woah! I had to take a double-take because I thought maybe I had written this post myself and just didn't recall! I also recently had the convo at 4yrs with my C-suite, after getting moved to new supervisor, about my salary and title. Former supervisor had been promising me a promotion and title change once I hired a direct report to prove I could manage others (I've managed tons of people in my long career, just not at this company). I did that--made the hire--no promotion. My new supervisor said they had no record of any of that! So, I made a whole presentation for my new supervisor with metrics, charts, marketing comps, to prove up my promotion and title change.
Curently at "CorporateCounsel" but sole company attorney, handle all matters, very high volume (work has quadrupled since my hire), and it's widely recognized that I am overworked and that I do great work by company colleagues. They came back with "no--we don't even need an attorney in-house." Only approved COL increase, no raise, no title change, and some B.S. explanation about how GCs only manage M&A work and we have none so the title doesn't fit my role. I am now waiting to get the news they have made decision to downsize my role. Salary is way under what I know my role is worth (Started at $130, now $150k, bonuses have been skipped last 2 yrs due to financial downturn). I initially accepted the lower pay because it was supposed to be better WLB and much less work (had been in a super toxic round-the-clock work industry prior to this role). I accepted less pay for less work and better mental health. Now, I'm working around the clock, not getting paid for it, it's proven to be not be a temporary spike, and they just told me suck it.
Needless to say, I'm looking elsewhere. But, scary to not know what's on the other side, or how long I even have here if they decide to let me go for asking for what I think I've earned. Your story makes it even more sobering.
