Having had these jobs and managing teams of people who have these types of jobs, you have to focus on two areas and show empathy and accommodation in those areas:
The time commitment: Some people love travel, especially if they’re early in their career. Most mid career & advanced career people, travel increasingly becomes a hassle, even if they enjoy it. Put a focus on allowing the frequent traveler to have more control over their time when they’re not traveling. For example, if you’re on the road over a week, fly back on a Sunday and are expected to be in the office Monday morning at 8 AM for no particular reason….that’s not going to sit well. All situations vary, but in general having a attitude of respect for the person’s time and acknowledging that long stretches spent traveling take away from people managing their personal life and spending time with loved ones is important. Make sure the travel is meaningful as well. The individual knows what their role is specifically and doesn’t feel like it’s a waste or checking a box, especially if they have other more pressing things to do. Show that as a company, you appreciate the willingness to give so much of their time to the job.
The actual travel: Travel is a huge hassle, even for people like me that enjoy it. It would help if you had policies that make this easy, such as allowing travel bookings without 10 layers of complexity to get approvals. Not requiring your people to buy seats in the back of the plane with connections. Let them have extra legroom & book direct flights. When things go off the rails, and flights are canceled due to weather or itinerary changes, make sure there is adequate support for that person to get home or get where they need to go. Per diems and expense policies for things that happen on the road, including entertainment of vendors and clients should be clear and easy to understand and not complicated.
Make sure that travel is easy and not burdensome. Make sure that the employee does not have to fight for reimbursement for reasonable things, or have to fight internal processes for weeks just to book a hotel stay that’s required as a part of an itinerary because it exceeds a limit by $40 for example.
Key is, showcasing as a company that you appreciate the time, you do your best to make travel as seamless as possible, and provide adequate support when things go off the rails.
Providing examples of promotional pathways coming out of traveling a lot for long period of time as part of the current role would also help.
Are you hiring? I’m interested if you’re, and I am open to travel 100% for work. Please DM me 😊
That sounds like my dream job. I would *love* anything that involves travel.
