What advice would you give to someone who has just started at an agency to stand out and impress their director? I know this isn't necessarily a salary-related question, but I am curious what I should be doing to make a good impression and succeed in my new role! Or hints that aren't as well-known that really help to stand out. I would really appreciate pointers.

Do good work and don’t be shy to talk about it.

Yes!!

The person above summed it up perfectly. Working hard and making progress matter, but being willing to get yourself noticed is vital.

Impress your director by making their job easier: anticipate client needs before they ask, flag problems early with solutions attached, and never surprise them in client meetings. Directors reward people who reduce their stress, not just produce good work.
Less obvious tips: track your wins for performance reviews now (agencies have short memories), learn which clients actually pay well (not all accounts are worth the same effort), and watch billable hours carefully – agencies promote people who bill consistently, not just creatively.
The uncomfortable truth: standing out gets you more work before it gets you more money. Set boundaries early or "high performer" becomes "does two jobs for one salary."

I’ve been at my company for 8 months. I just found out another designer who has been here for several years gets an annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year. I have never been told about a bonus and haven’t gotten one yet for the previous fiscal year that ended In July. Should I have been told I get a bonus when I signed on or are they typically a surprise?
