What are some companies thinking when they ask for 5-10 years experience in a specific technology? In my experience these things change so much that it hardly becomes relevant after 2-3 years where you recently worked with it a senior contributor. Why does that happen at all?

There is more to this than trends, it is about having 5-10 years experience in adaptation skill flexing, and leveraging historical knowledge for ideation, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Think of it like a functional area expertise and acumen maturity curve. The more you grow, the more you know.

Ugh, yes. It’s wild how often I see that and think—do they actually want that, or are they just tossing in every “nice-to-have” and hoping someone magically checks all the boxes? Feels like they forget how fast tech stacks evolve. I've seen folks with 3 years of deep hands-on experience outperform those with 10 years of legacy baggage. Would love to hear from a recruiter on what they actually mean when they write those lines.

Sometimes hiring managers have a bias towards things they know, and usually its tools that got them to their position. I wouldn't take offense to that because I tend to do the same thing too. Actually most people do that even if they dont mean it. We're creatures of habits. Maybe use that as an advantage instead of seeing this as a sign that the hiring manager is a dinosaur.

sorry for the using the word "tools", I meant to use that as the acumen of a person.

I meant to say that someone used or had this acumen that helped them to be promoted and put in a position to hire other people. Usually this acumen and knowledge is the baseline of our working knowledge and we tend to bias towards that knowledge even though new ideas are always formulated.

You are not wrong. Those numbers are often a proxy for seniority, not a literal requirement. Many job descriptions are written by committees or copied from old roles, so the years get inflated. What usually matters more is depth of understanding, recent hands on experience, and the ability to adapt as the tech changes.
