Great question. First would be visibility can surpass performance. If you do good work, make sure that's known. Secondly, HR is there to shield the company and that's about it. Thirdly, soft skills can be what matters. Technical and business knowledge are the baseline, it's being able to communicate and navigate the social dynamics that will get you ahead.

Three things for me. First, performance and perception are not the same thing. Second, loyalty is rarely reciprocated the way you expect. Third, documenting your wins matters more than venting about your losses. Work can be transactional without being cynical, but going in with eyes open saves a lot of disappointment.

I’d add that networking matters more than grades, burnout is real so set boundaries early, and titles often don’t match the actual work. Learning that early saves a lot of stress and frustration.
