What do you do about an associate who does great work but has large chunks of unavailability because they have a long commute (2+ hours)?

You work around their commute. Love that this person is spending 4+ hours on the road each day and doing great work and your concern is "how can I make them do even more for me"

Tell me you're American without telling me you're American

likefunnyhelpful

Probably let them work remote lol

That sounds fantastic!

This post is giving corporate vulture.
You leave them alone, so they can focus on not dying on their drive to and from work.

That definitely makes sense !!

Is their commute interfering with normal working hours? If not, that sounds like more of a you problem than a them problem.

My MDs have no concept of "normal working hours", unfortunately

I was in the office 8:30 - 4:30 and used to commute 2.5 hours each way. It was the most miserable period of my life. I did great work, but I was constantly exhausted to the point of taking micro-naps during the day. They could have let me work from home but senior mgt was a horrible, vindictive woman.

I did it for two years until they closed down the office and I got a great package.

They caused it by moving the office and requiring us to work onsite.

Why are you making this your problem? What do YOU think you need to do in this situation? If they do great work, can you not cover for them while they are unavailable during their commute? I’m not clear on what your desired outcome is here.

likesmart

The MD should not get mad. The associate should be able to join by phone. Just communicate to the MDs that this person's long commute requires them to join by phone 6pm or later.

likesmart

Does the associate actually need to come in every day if the MD is calling you to begin with?

Either make it work, have the associate relocate, or roll off the project if it’s that big of an issue

like

Fire him

Guys, I can't control if the MD calls the 3 of us spontaneously at 6 PM, and then gets pissed he's driving. Although I don't bug people outside of normal working hours, my MDs have no concept of that

I'm very happy to see everyone is so pro-work life balance, but also surprised you're not used to late calls / meetings. That's been the unfortunate norm at the two consulting firms I've worked at.

I've had so many stupid 8 to midnight or later fire drills...

After listening to the Mike Saylor podcast with Lex Friedman, it made me reconsider my notions I had about BTC layer 2. IMO ETH has thoroughly eaten BTC’s lunch from a development/dapp perspective. I’m 50/50 allocated in both because as Mike says BTC is durable digital property while I see ETH as the platform for application functionality. Would be interested to hear other’s takes. At the core of it, I’m not sure myself and others will ever want to spend BTC, even if fees were negligible.
