Why does US want to defend Taiwan, but not Ukraine? Is it purely for economic impact reasons?

Are you kidding? The US is very involved in Ukraine.

like

as to why defend taiwan - purely strategic interest - semiconductors. nobody would care that much otherwise. Taiwan going under would directly affect mil posture iirc

also - similar to taiwan, us has taught and funded ukraines forces. your premise is wrong

like

The US has been in a treaty to defend Taiwan since 1955. There were no chips there back then

likesmart

First their are no treaties involved in this with either nation. If we directly fight Russia with US military personnel it risks a wider conflict up to nuclear conflict. Ukrainian people are admirable but not of significant interest to the US or worth direct conflict with Russia. Thwarting Russia is the best we can hope for to discourage other incursions in the region. China has been expanding their hegemony in Asia. China has gone so far as to claim the Senkaku islands, enlarge them and put a base on them. Chinas claim to Taiwan is matter of Chinese opinion vs Taiwanese opposition and if the US said nothing about defending Taiwan it would embolden China. Yes we like goods from Taiwan but having an ally off the coast of China is an advantage for us and a problem for China. Think of it this way if the Catalina island off California we’re friendly with China we wouldn’t like and would probably do something about it. Never forget America will always act in her best interests. Even when we look like the good guy we are not being selfless.

like

And you’re not even looking like the good guy, every country / alliance is putting their own interests first

What? The US has spent hundreds of billions defending Ukraine.

like

Really? Hundreds of billions? Why not quadruples of billions?

Yes, but also existing treaties. Though it's more complicated. Obvious value and treaties aside, Ukraine also has immense economic value, just more through letting Russia drain itself than directly like Taiwan and its chips

like

It’s a complicated matter that requires a decent amount of geopolitical context, but the thrust of it is that the US has had its Taiwan stance as a tacit policy for decades, and it never provided for a security guarantee for Ukraine under the terms of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum

There’s also a lot of Pacific allies invested in US support and the adjacent question of North Korea which is relevant. That said, we’ve sent billions of $$$ of aid to Ukraine, and they may be knocking out a Western rival for good — which is an amazing coup. This is on top of the victory from the 1994 deal which destroyed all of Ukraine’s nuclear weapons in a victory for non-proliferation

like

Yes to BCG1. NATO was kind of wilting before the invasion and not that interesting to a post-cold war Europe... Russia, in one of the greatest miscalculations of our time, thought they (sorry- a certain HE) could weaken NATO with the invasion once and for all. And of course, the opposite has happened and NATO is now hotter than Jell-O shots on spring break. Never thought Finland would want to join but here we are!!

uplifting

There are lots of little reasons explained above, and another little reason is that Russia implied they will start nuking any country getting involved

like

Because before Russia invaded Ukraine, Biden said there will be consequences but not that the US would get directly involved in the fighting. That gave Putin the green light to move in. So Biden learned from his mistake and is being more upfront that the US will directly defend Taiwan.

Also the strategic significance of Taiwan as an ally (first line of defense) against PRC aggression and its geographic advantages in the pacific region

Hi Everyone !!!

This June I completed my 9 months at Career Level 12 and Sub Level 3 I.e, CL 12.3 at
Accenture Operations. My Annual Talent Discussion and One-on-One with People Lead is complete as of last week.

I have 3 questions now :
1. When can I expect to move to 12.2 ?
2. What is the general hike I can expect ? And when it is reflected ?
3. When will be the variable pay will be paid out ?

Can anyone here help me with this performance cycle part ? I am really confused.

I thought I would ask this here too because some of you may spend a lot of time at the Daley center and I’m dying to know the answer to this pressing concern.

The tree at the NW corner of Dearborn and Washington at Daley Center. WHY is it always covered with thousands of birds. I could walk across the loop and not see a single bird but when I get to DCP, every day, rain or shine or heat or cold, thousands of birds. What is up with this tree? Why is it special?

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?
