I had an (unqualified) customer ask for a referral. I felt if I said no it would negatively impact our commercial relationship.
I told them to submit their resume against the job and use my name as a reference, then I would receive a workflow to provide a reference.
When I received it, I responded with a note to the recruiter that I did not support the candidate but it was a customer and I couldn’t refuse the referral.
Customer was happy I referred them and recruiter didn’t waste time qualifying an unqualified candidate.
Didn’t win the honesty reward, but it got the job done.
“I don’t think I am the right person to give you a referral”. If they press, “I’m not comfortable with giving you a referral.”
Just give the referral unless someone has been completely horrible. Companies let people go without batting an eye. People need to support each other and you may get good karma later.
That’s a tough one! I’d probably be honest but tactful. Maybe say something like, "I really value our past work together, but I don’t feel confident giving a strong referral at this time. I’d suggest seeking feedback from someone who worked more closely with you on projects." It's tough but fair!
This is also a sidestep. You're using the excuse that there's probably someone else who can give better feedback. I wouldn't say this is honest at all, but it is tactful for sure.
I give referrals out with out vetting or making sure anyone is qualified or a good fit. But referrals don’t do much tbh, if it’s someone that I am close with and feel is good fit I will refer them and email the hiring manager about them. So depending on how heavy your company takes referrals I’d just refer them and add very vague short notes, Hr or anyone reviewing the application will understand right away
My last company had a “ no references” policy for anyone outside HR… and even they would only confirm past employment. That’s always a great opt out to use. “Sorry… it’s against company policy”.
Has this happen to me once, I got the call from the new company and asked what that person would be doing. They wound up having a few qualities they were looking for that were positives and I agreed with those. They asked me my opinion of other things and I stated it wasn’t relevant to their work. Also, just say no if you’re uncomfortable, sucks but at least it’s honest.
Always be helpful doesn’t matter if they fit the job or not
Honestly, I’ve been there! The best response I came up with is: “With my current title, I’m not sure it would significantly impact your job application.” You can mention your current position and clarify that you don’t have a direct connection with the hiring manager or the department. Additionally, you could share that while the company has its strengths, you’ve encountered challenges in your role that you wouldn’t want them to face. Now this could be a lie or perhaps, it’s true on your end. Personally, it was the truth for me but at the same token, I didn’t want them to work there either.
How honest do you want to be? You can tell them what you perceive their strengths to be and let them know their perceived weaknesses. They might have addressed some with further learning.
I gave a referral for someone who did have a good work ethic in the past but when they started within 6 months they had instances of work avoidance and gross misconduct, referrals can be tricky that's why I don't give them anymore and expect people to apply on their own merits
Just because you refer them, doesn't guarantee them a job. They would still need to follow the interview process. At my company people would post ads places to get CVs to do submit for roles to claim a 5k finders bounty!
Reached out to the HM and there’s an offer pending. I’ll look out for future roles on this team and will let you know.
And don’t let them know, easy as that

If they cannot handle the hard truth then they will not be a joy for your manager to work with, ie: not taking constructive criticism well. So just be honest, and if they lash out at you, tell them this is what you mean, they're not going to be a good fit here.
"Thank you for choosing me to assist with the reference. Based on my previous experience with referrals, I feel uncomfortable referring colleagues."
