I've always fibbed about how much I'm currently making to boost my negotiating power a bit. Not sure how risky this is, but if they're going to put me in that position I feel justified doing it.
The number I’ve given is the minimum I would accept as an offer, plus 5 percent. It’s worked twice, this time for a 20 percent increase.
In an interview they shouldn’t be asking you about your current pay, that’s a red flag. If they are asking you about your desired salary that’s different.
I look on Glassdoor for pay ranges for the position at the company I am applying to. This is done prior to that initial call and I give them a realistic range that fits in my research. However the lower side of the range is what i actually want/happy to have as base. So even if they try to give you the lowest amount, thats what you wanted, anything higher is just a plus
Beware, I’ve had two companies, large companies, in the past 30 days in a screening interview ask me about salary. I did not answer with a specific number, but I intern gave them either the band that I looked up on glass door or the band that was in their job description. Both of them had bands up to 145 to about 160 K. In the screening interview by HR, they had asked about a desired salary, and I told them peers what was on the job role and or on the job description for their company. Then they came back both of them and said oh for your area, the salary bands only 80k to 90 K. That is really frustrating, number one because they’re trying to lowball you. Number two if they don’t delineate areas in a job description that’s on them that’s not on me.
How do you guys feel about that? Any HR people in this bowl, how do you feel about it
I’m not in an HCOL but don’t you think you should post that low of a band? I don’t know if there are any areas in the United States any longer that are LCOL not when an average price house is almost half a $1 million.
You say I feel it’s a bit early in our discussions to talk dollar amounts. And promote the value you will bring to their company and ask what the pay range is for the positions in the team you are looking to join.

Always this!
Hit them with MARKET VALUE. If they push you say a range and then specify your pay within that range is based on your years of experience
I tell them. I make a lot of money and I want a job that pays more. I also offer up W2’s as proof. I figured so many people just straight up lie, so me offering proof is good.
