Is it easy for engineers to become TPMs?
I recently interviewed with MITRE for a systems engineering role to make the move from Leidos where I feel underpaid for the work I do and for my experience ($85K). I have 4 YOE, a STEM degree, and soon will have a Masters Degree. I’m looking to make around $120K in the new role at Mitre. Does anyone have any insight into comp there? This would be in the DC metro area. Does $120K seem reasonable or am I dreaming?

To clarify, I love the company I work at and I don't have plans to leave to get that opportunity, was moreso just in my own head and trying to figure out what I did wrong in relation to the other candidates. I think the more I talk it out and think about it, I realize I likely didn't do anything wrong, per sé, there was just a better fit with those other candidates and I will get my chance at some point. Thank you all for providing your insight. :)
Keep applying, and overemphasize anything you might've done to help colleagues (especially any de facto expected responsibilities, since you were lead). You'll still have a blank for applied HR-type experience, but that's one you'll have to brush under the rug and hope someone will chance you
Also keep in mind that the more qualifications, the more up to chance the interview. One rejection is meaningless when it comes to applying to technical, managerial, or any level-higher roles. It's very normal to go through a whole bunch of interviews before you get an offer.
It’s totally fair for you to ask for feedback as to why you didn’t get it and what you can work on. Just be sure to frame this in a positive ‘im always keen to do better’ way, not a complaint/why them not me.
If your manager is genuinely interested in your development, they’ll outline the gap you had vs the successful candidate and then help you come up with a tangible plan and timeline to address it. (Or at least the first part, the second part often needs a push from you)
Sometimes you just gotta jump ship to get that promotion
Do you want to be in management or is this about pay?
Get really clear about the impact and outcome you aim to create.
Ask for feedback as mentioned above. Get super clear about your approach/campaign.
I have a Celebrate BRAVE episode all about how to get clear and make your promotion inevitable (not necessary at the same place.) If that sounds interesting, give it a listen.
Keep trying and really highlight what you have done as lead. Someone will give you a chance.
Go back and calculate some examples where your direct influence with Co workers, client, Procurement....etc have saved the company cost savings.
Early project completions, payment negotiations that have pushed payment, retention rates of your customers have directly impacted the company.
Wrap it all up in a pretty presentation and demand softly that they need to reconsider given your accomplishments. Make them think, it is all about cost savings now, that's why you were probably told no.
