As someone that is on the other end of the phone, I’m always appreciative when the client tells me up front when they need it, and also doesn’t rush things if they don’t have to. If you consistently give me a week to turn stuff, I will be much more willing to turn something in two days because I know you really need it. If you always need something yesterday, you will become the bane of my existence. Especially around the holidays when it’s the busiest time of the year.
Reasonable = whatever you say it is, you’re the client. Let me know if you need a quick turnaround, happy to help ;)
How many of these agreements do you ask outside counsel to review a week?
Echoing one of the posts above if you're the client reasonable is when you say it is and when you need it. It's more helpful for me if I know what your internal time table is. Ie you need my comments or drafts x days before you give them to your boss. From there I can work backwards.
Depending on the size of the document you want reviewed or drafted same day is reasonable as is 2 or 3 days or a week for that matter.
I typically give outside counsel 7-10 business days for first set of redlines. However, 90% of the time, they take 3+ weeks. Agreements are commercial transportation contracts (shipper, brokerage, etc.) and range in size from 10-25 pages. I have stopped giving deadlines because in 11 months of being at the company, this firm has never met any deadlines. I have been told by internal executive that there is 0% chance we get rid of this firm.
This is insane. I’m a commercial lawyer with drafts often running 100 pages and we get MAYBE three days to turn them. Docs of the size you’re describing are usually turned in 24-36 hours.
The client gets to dictate and the firm should either meet the deadlines or expect the work to go elsewhere. Having stated that, Theos has been a busy year for me and near the holidays everyone wants the work completed yesterday. One thing that is overlooked, you have to establish a relationship with the firm and select members. You should also expect only a few attorneys on the file, if not everyone at the form will bill for the work. Beware of those invoices with multiple billing timekeepers happy.
The law firm has been the exclusive outside firm at this company for 15 years. I have no say on their personnel, dictating their timeframes, etc. All the sales folks are fed up and come to me for answers, but i just say its with the law firm.
