They're being cheap. You should be getting at least as much as an outside firm.
Because you’re also getting a salary and benefits from them. Outside counsel is not. I’m assuming you’re probably also getting bonuses outside of origination fees? You’re not paying for the staff, office supplies, malpractice insurance, marketing, technology, etc. It’s very expensive to run a firm. Try it for yourself if you’re getting cases and want to keep the entire fee.

The problem with this argument is that if an associate is not receiving the customary 1/3 referral, they could simply give the case to his or her friend's firm and get that 1/3. So in this case, the employer really has no leverage to offer any less than the 1/3.
I have noticed this as well. I think a lot of firms try to lean towards paying 1/3. Not sure why that is....welll I am sure it has to do with brining in more money for the firm.
