I've had bosses who really cared about their employees and it showed. And the workers tended to do a good job for them. It's one of those things that becomes a virtuous circle, respect goes both ways and the entire effort benefits. So sure, it's about more than pay.

Absolutely — when leadership genuinely cares, it creates a positive cycle that lifts everyone up. Respect and trust often mean more than just a paycheck.

I've had friends who work for horrible companies, companies that I hate and would never work for, who absolutely loved their job. The common denominator? They had a great direct supervisor who cared. I also know people who worked for great companies and hated it. They had horrible managers.
The best thing to do, as a manager, is care about your people, and show it. Also, act like a buffer between them and whatever corporate bs your boss throws at you. ;)

So true! A great manager can make or break the whole experience, no matter how “great” the company is. Being that caring buffer is a superpower in itself. ;)
