How to do that - have good questions prepared + ask about their personal experience (if they don’t have experience in what you are interested in, ask what they know about it / if they can refer you to someone else afterwards).
From being on both sides of it, I can tell by tone and facial expression and lack of follow-up questions when someone is not invested in hearing my answers.
It is more natural if you lead the conversation after an introduction where I would most likely ask about your education / work background, week, where you are in the process, etc. After that, I usually ask something like - how can I help you today, what questions do you have for me, etc? That’s your cue to lead.
