What should a 3rd year MD be making? $300-$400, or is this insanely low?

It all depends on the firm.

Deloitte offered me $600k base plus bonus.
I’m at Accenture as a 3rd year MD making ~$700-800 depending on how good a year it was. The first was good. Last 2 have not been.

True, but the omission of the L2 level made the dataset worse until others asked for clarification

It’s not apples to apples as far as I can tell.

Boutique like me: our 3-4 year MDs are $320-350k base with a target bonus of 35% that is partially individual and partially firm, but that target hasn’t been met for years so it is more like half of that. We also have some equity components. Finally, there is a fair amount of autonomy if you show you know how to sell and that comes with the ability to maintain solid work life balance including when to travel.

I am aware that is low dollars compared to others like B4 or Accenture where base is $400-450k on the low end and probably much higher, but it’s also lower stress and I believe the flame out percentage is lower for DAP.

So maybe you’re in the range but there are trade-offs. That’s how I look at my own situation.

Thanks WM1…we comp with other mid size places so that’s good to know. I do worry we are going to lose good people when the market turns around though.

All in? Prolly just north of $500

Depends on where you are - big firm or small firm, and what you do - audit or risk won’t pay as much as let’s say m&a or some areas of tech.

What should it be?

2 year MD at 450k.

P6. how is a third year MD making $800k at a big 4. No chance.

While an exception, there are absolutely MDs who out-earn some partners, though there are likely less than 1% of MDs that do. Each B4 has a specific approach to this (I know because I interviewed with a couple of them before making MD and then again after about 2 years as an MD). In most cases, it is tied to practice leadership. In my case, I chose to be an MD at that company because I had started up a new high revenue and high growth practice predominantly on my own (stumbled into it while working with a client and then scaled it into a reasonably in-demand offering with senior partner support), and to stay there, I wanted more money than an entry level partner could make. They chose to write up a specific employment contract and make me an MD, with a clause on how soon I could be considered for admission to the partnership if I chose to make the transition. In retrospect, I made the wrong choice not going for partner right away, but at the time, I was on a high that I out-earned most partners who were less than 3-4 years in.

That’s v low - maybe you’re talking about a small firm where MD isn’t really MD?

2nd year: 400. Next year, don’t know

B4 MD here. I was between $450-550K at year 3, varied based on bonus - base increases YoY are pretty low so negotiate for the best on that.

2 years ago Deloitte offered me $430k as base for an MD role. I didn’t take it you can extrapolate and plot a Y3-4 progression with that as a starting point.

Third year MD @ $480k.

Depends where. A PwC MD is different than a Deloitte MD which is different than ….

I mean - consulting or finance or accounting? Top firm or middle firm or smaller firm? I don’t want to sound like a jerk but you should know this or have a sense, and if you’re asking here I’d question the quality of your network and thus your future.

You are a jerk. Obvi ChatGPT or my network can give me this info. I’m asking here to get a variety of data points from partners across firms. Additionally, friends and network aren’t always super open about discussing their personal comp outside of an anonymous forum.

Is that base or with bonus ?

Yeah — this ^^^

You have to count equity too. If you’re pushing $500k in your third year as an MD you are definitely in the ballpark

At that point it comes down to your personal performance and ability to get to the next step

Depends on company and metrics. At a big4, at 3rd year I was just south of 800K all in, though with a very high sales target that I negotiated.

2nd year MD. TC ~2m

P5 - each group works a bit different, but base is typically between $300-500k. Bonus is uncapped broadly based on revenue produced in year (technically a % of contribution margin but it’s all correlated), and you also get annual cash distributions on equity plus unrealized appreciation on the equity. MD at A&M is more comparable to Partner at a Big 4, so it may not be the most comparable to this thread since MD is the level before Partner at Big 4.

This is low. What’s your firm?

Big 4 MD, 3rd year now. 315k. Tech consulting

That is surprising. I have been talking with 3rd year MDs offered more like $400-450k in EY advisory. Is “tech consulting” different from advisory?

That’s insanely low unless you are a pure tech guy in a smaller firm

Tell me your craziest experience working with a TV network. Here comes mine:

I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. I discovered they were going to be paid to appear in a famous Hispanic TV show, where a "judge" receives a case, hears the plaintiffs and defendants and renders a verdict. But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.
