honestly, freedom writers is very good, a bit more serious in terms of some of our experiences but it does tend to ring true for how difficult gaining the trust of your students can be
Even that teacher only lasted 4 years. Yeah, not realistic at all.
I love Abbott elementary! I love a show that’s actually about elementary school and not high school and the characters are really funny and well played by amazing actors. I just wonder how those teachers have so much time to chitchat ha ha!
Just like anything else until they work as a teacher no one really knows. As a substitute teacher I worked with all grades and I am now a high school teacher. I am always entertained by "Bad Teacher" but I do not think any shows what it is really like. Even the Ron Clark Story was dramatized.
My favorite school movie is "The Principal" (1987) with James Belushi. There are others that are really great too, like Ron Clark Story, Freedom Writers, and others. But The Principal is the best because I related to the inner-city kids while substituting for seven years. There are also books about teachers, schools, and students too. I didn't realize there were so many until I was getting my license for Gifted Intervention Specialist, it was kind of exciting to discover there were more than just textbooks.
I haven’t seen anything that remotely touches what small rural school is like.
I do love AP Bio as my favorite Ed show. But it’s real in some funny ways, but not close to realistic. Vice Principals also had some interesting takes on interschool politics.
Educational shows are about as close to being a realistic view into Ed as what I have seen from shows that try to portray life as a minister.
This is a good opportunity to remind ourselves about the gell-man amnesia effect.

I couldn’t have said it any better. Well done.
Theres plenty of fun shows n movies. Abbott if you take away the camp and PRINCIPAL. Its pretty accurate . Teachers shuffling trying their best without resources. Ramdom work shops to improve from some company...veteran teachers who act like the S when they are the S . Opinionated and dont feel like they need to acquiesce to the new....perky annoying new teachers who should sshhhhh and not be extra. Tbe quort stoic, the nerdy/ am i cool / kid abused ( yet loved) , the angry teacher , the cell phones. Teacher hook ups, The trouble kid. Thd nuts parents who think they know, the 2nd job, every episode is very real except for 22 min resolution i
Christmas Story
The Blackboard Jungle from 1955 still stands the test of time.

Honestly, none of them. I don’t think I’ve seen any shows that truly focus on the 90% of work that the general public doesn’t see. The politics of teaching, the endless hours of grading, planning, & prep. The unpaid work hours that truly HAVE to be done to do the job moderately well. The behavior issues with no support. The institutional racism that all of us participate in even with the best intentions. Most movies celebrate being a martyr to the job, which is so incredibly unhealthy and unsustrainable. There’s a whole lot of cult of personality from on screen teachers that is not motivating or lasting in real classrooms. Many teachers onscreen are put in the “YT Savior“ role, especially in the movies with students living in poverty. Chess is often the magic bullet to get kids out of apathy and low test scores. I guess a reasonable representation of teaching would be “Stand and Deliver” though some of it hasn’t aged well. The sacrificing everything to be considered “a good teacher“ has very real consequences for the teacher there, and the racism inherent in the system is apparent. Kids must work hard to dig themselves out. The teacher needs to work harder; Herculean and untenable. If the system were equitably funded, supports were in place for all students, parents were supportive of education , and the students were put as the first priority, teachers wouldn’t need to do the impossible with nothing.
The Shield.
