What's everyone's stance on having a five-year plan? How do you usually go about making one?

I don't have one. A focus on some short-term goals and improvements, but I don't see a reason to have a 5-year plan

The idea of this is good because it’s like a map. If we don’t have one, it’s less likely we’ll reach our destination. But it can be hard to define the destination.

To be transparent, I don’t truly have one at work … other than a goal like being promoted (or there was a time that I wanted to switch my organization from consulting to internal). I am happy with my career level … as a single parent, I don’t aspire to something “higher.”

I would focus on things that help you build skills in the short term so that you have more options in the long-term. So there could be a certification at work or a class at a local community college.

Every year, after the big new years celebration I sit down and review my 5 year plan. It keeps you aligned to your objectives. You start moving in your life with a purpose and objectives in mind instead of getting the wind push you around. The first 5 year plan was difficult to make and actually everything I wrote down I ended up achieving in 1 year...

I hang around people that believe in, set, and work towards daily/monthly/yearly goals and duplicate what they do as it fits with my life and what I want to accomplish.
