Be wary of talking a staff attorney position. It’s unlikely you’d be able to pivot that to an on-track role. Most (all?) firms don’t put staff attorneys on the website so you can’t exactly pass yourself off as an associate—you wouldn’t have an associate title and it’s overall a pretty different job function. I’d try to get an on-track position in mid law or a lower ranked firm over staff atty in big law, with the hope of lateraling again in a couple years.

Try one of the morgan lewis off track positions. Internally and externally very few people will know you are off track
Cat's out of the bag on these Morgan Lewis positions. Fried Frank too.
I did it. What helped most was really leaning into the fact that ID associates often get significantly more hands-on lit experience early on than big law. During my first year I focused on getting all the experience I could. By the end I had great experience engaging in depos, trial prep, drafting and arguing motions, etc. early on in my career which became my biggest resume booster.
Also, work ethic matters. If you don’t have pedigree, you compensate with performance and reps. And work with a recruiter — they know which firms are actually open to this path.
Thank you. This is helpful. I have all that experience along with significant client contact (direct client and carrier). I’ve learned understanding the business of the carrier client has helped as well.
Don't sell yourself short thinking you can only get a staff attorney role. Your experience can be transferable. You may need to take a haircut in class year but that's likely worth it.
You might have success applying to a below-market firm or L&E boutique, especially in a smaller market with lower supply of BigLaw laterals. I would recommend trying to apply directly vs. through a recruiter (and I am a recruiter) unless you're contacted about the specific opportunity and the recruiter confirms that the firm is open to ID candidates.
Don’t do staff attorney. You’ll never get out of it! Leverage your litigation experience and network your butt off. That will get you in the door somewhere. Look cover “coverage” associate positions. You can leverage your “insurance” knowledge this way.
Thank you for the responses everyone. To be clear, I am not advocating to present myself as someone I am not (i.e., associate vs. staff attorney). I like my bar number too much to lose credibility, especially over a job title. It was more about whether the jump would be (i) possible and (ii) worth it long term.
