The one I hate, not necessarily the strangest: "I was going to join the X but Y happened so I didn't."
Dude, I don't care. You aren't obliged to give me a reason.
This one is super weird. I think SP1 is right; America has an odd relationship with vets/military service. But it feels so awkward because then it puts you in a position of wondering whether they're looking for something from you, which was never why you mentioned that you were a vet.
"wow so like you've killed people?"
This question just floors me. I’ve seen this happen in work settings and it is literally civilians having no clue.
It makes me cringe every time and I don’t know how you guys don’t just say yeah what do you think we train for?
Pro
i have been accused of stolen valor before, it made me laugh… my retirement id says differently
I've been questioned as if I'm lying about my service. I'm female and don't really look "military"
Was at my sister's bachelorette in NYC right after my first deployment. She and her friends were all lawyers from big name schools. The more drinks they had, the more people they would tell/ask, "Can you believe she's in the Army!?!" Literally cab driver, waiter etc.
I had a client tell me he was also in the Navy... Well, it was for 2 years.... 2 years in the navy reserves.... It was ROTC and he quit after summer "training"
Lol
People have questioned me because I have veteran plates on a Porsche.
And I hope you told them to mind their own business ;)
When someone tries to relate by saying their relative was in the military and can’t answer any follow-up questions from me about it. Why even bring it up if you can’t speak on it?
This is a point of view I had not heard before but thank you for bringing it up. I’m glad I know enough about my dad‘s army career to first of all be very proud of it, and second of all understand it, at least the parts that we know about.
"Have you killed someone?"
"Have you been raped? I bet you wouldn't let your daughter join."
"They let you keep your hair?!"
"I bet you're happy Trump is in office"
"But it's not like you were on the front lines as a woman" *Deployment 1 - Ran convoys up and down highway 1 out of Lagman Deployment 2 - Shank and Fenty...if you know you know
“Have you been raped?” !!! Wtf whether veteran or not 🤮
Get same question about “front lines” because I was in logistics. People just have no idea.
Someone shook my hand, said “thank you for your service. Better you than me. “
